Just in Case
Strikethrough '07 Ongoing Report: In an effort to avoid spamming the hell outta my flist, I'll just update this post continually with new info.

Note: the list has been reordered and now goes from newest to oldest ... 'cause that just makes more sense, doesn't it? :)

ETA31: Thanks to [info]f13tch3r I now have a link to IJ's administrator's journal. He clears up some things in that post I've linked you to about who owns IJ (some people have been mistakenly thinking it's 6A) and states that no journals will be deleted unless there is a DMCA violation or court order to remove content.

ETA30: Blurty. Never heard of it, but it looks interesting. It's another LJ alternative.

ETA29: [info]innocence_jihad has brought to our attention FandomFreenet.com, an open-source site that's being created for fanfiction and art.

ETA28: [info]innocence_jihad has some important posts about getting a refund from LJ/6A, and complaining about the pro-ana and child abuse comms.

ETA27: Fandom porn? No. Bible-based child abuse? Oh, sure, why not!

ETA26: [info]synecdochic's suggestions on how to get LJ/6A to hear us. And in this very important post she also clarifies obscenity laws.

ETA25: LJ's response to fandom's concerns: Illegal and Harmful Content Clarifications.

ETA24: Ponderosa121 has important news about a serious LJ bug/security problem that she has discovered through her suspension.

ETA23: An informative post about LJ, 6A and Obscenity Laws.

ETA:22: A proposed open letter to LJ/6A.

ETA21: Interesting convo between [info]violet_quill and [info]burr86. It took place in [info]violet_quill's LJ and was reposted, with permission, in GJ's fandomtossed comm.

ETA20: Not technically a Strikethrough thing, but still really important. For my American peeps and, to a lesser extent, those of us posting fanfic/fanart on American servers:

Unfortunately, there is a bill introduced in Congress that would radically alter the already draconian DMCA, so that even the perceived intent to violate copyright becomes a criminal offense punishable by jail time, massive fines and other such niceties.

Here are three things that can be done:

1. Let your Congress Critters know that you oppose this law. I personalized the letter, as that may carry a little more weight. I also changed the wording in the last paragraph from 'fans' to 'citizens', as it's more universal.

2. Email friends about this. No matter who they are, this law will affect them very badly. Whether we like it or not, no matter how hard we try not to, we all violate copyright laws (case in point: 'Happy Birthday To You' is still under copyright), and that will get worse under this proposal.

3. For those still on LJ at all, join LJ's fandom_action. It's a new community that is likely to have stuff on it that can help us to protect ourselves in certain concrete ways. It's not perfect, but it's a start, and may turn out to be a good place to 'meet' about some of the legal issues we face as fans. I might not have found that EFF site, had I not joined them and seen their post.

ETA19: Here's an interesting article about LJ and 6A's troubles and the possibility of Brad jumping ship.

ETA18: Posted in [info]fandom_flies: here's a post that clarifies the differences between what [info]atrata, moderator of [info]fandom_flies, is doing, and what [info]twocorpses is doing with the Scribblit Project. Here's a post in [info]twocorpses's journal clarifying her goals and some other things about the Scribblit Project. Read up and see which you're more interested in. Personally, I think both projects are excellent.
ETA17: Very good article here. If you're unclear on the situation, or think fandom is just being whiney (in which case I'm not sure I want you in my journal), read it. Very informative.

ETA16: And I may as well bring this link up here, 'cause it's so useful: Brown-Betty's guide on how to back-up your LJ and even upload it to an LJ clone.

ETA15: Absolutely fucking brilliant article by GJ's kara_mckay about the current LJ vs. Child Porn situation. Seriously. You must read it now.

ETA14: Guess what, paid LJers! You get to see all the pretty ads, too! Good times. :D

ETA13: An IJ post about yet another reason why buying a paid/permanent account with LJ is a dumb idea.

ETA12: Here's a post, over at LJ's [info]fandom_flies, disucussing who exactly LJ thinks it is appointing themselves as the Artistic Merit Police, JournalFen as a possible refuge, and the desperate need for fandom to create its own new home and all the problems that go along with such an endeavour.

ETA11: Some ideas on how fandom can stay in touch if a move happens. Posted at [info]fanthropology.

ETA10: SPEAK OUT! Here's a link to a GJ post containing the contact info to some of the companies that will be doing business with LJ, either by providing sponsored moodthemes and layouts or by handling the sale of LJ-logo clothing. Contact these companies and let them know how dissatisfied you are with LJ and 6A. But be nice. Be calm and respectful. Otherwise we look like the jerks.

Also, here are a couple of links to other GJ posts containing 6A's contact info: three of their head offices and a 6A fax number. Give them a shout and tell them how we really feel.

And another GJ post that links to info about contacting the Better Business Bureau.

ETA9: LJ's Report Abuse form is here. Go report something stupid just for kicks. (Unless, of course, abuse of the Abuse form could get you banninated. In which case, never mind.) Also have a look at this post over in GJ's Fandom Tossed community. Heh.

ETA8: Pondy has linked to an awesome political cartoon in her GJ. And here it is for your viewing pleasure: Frank/David, not worksafe.

ETA7:: Go read this. It's an LJers very well-written response to LA and 6A's methods. It's quite beautiful.

ETA6: Click here for a big list of links regarding the issue.

ETA5: Click here for an explanation of why artwork like the image that got Pondy suspended (click here to see it - Snarry, NC-17) is, in fact, in violation of the ToS when they don't appear to be. *sigh* I'm so sad I could cry.

ETA4: [info]fandom_flies is a comm that's been created specifically for discussing the creation of a safe, fannish space. You will find fandom_flies comms at GreatestJournal, InsaneJournal and JournalFen as well.

ETA3: Here, go have a look at this post. It's got a list of the pros and cons of the most popular LJ clones and a poll asking what you would be willing to do to support fandom if it moves.

ETA2: [info]twocorpses is working on setting up a new journaling website using LJ code. For 18+ only, though. Not only 18+ anymore. We're back to 18+ only. Read about the reasons for the switch-back here. Beta testing is set to begin soon. Go check things out if you wanna get in on it. No more beta tester spots are available, however, if you're good at perl programming or BML, you might be able to help out around the site. Go to [info]twocorpses's journal for more info and to volunteer.

ETA: Keep yourselves informed.

Hey, hey, hey! Holla if ur nervous as hell, y'all!

Here. Back-up your journals at GJ or IJ or wherever using LJ-Sec if you're worried. This journal is now completely backed up over at IJ. I don't intend to jump ship and start blogging over there yet, of course, but it's nice to know all my stupid blatherings are relatively safe. Just in case. GJ is great for all the free stuff, and I may back-up all this journal's entries over there, too, at some point, but IJ has much better things being said about it than GJ. Ya get what ya pay for, I guess.

Unfortunately, Semagic doesn't seem to have an IJ option. *pouts* Ah, well. Nevermind. I figured it out.

I have no idea if it makes a difference, but I've changed the Chronicles' e-mail address so it doesn't have the same one as this journal. Changed the password, too, just in case. You know, so if the Chronicles get the axe, The Man might not realise that journal is connected to this one.

Maybe I shouldn't be building my bomb shelter just yet, as it's the artists who are under the gun at the mo'. But we're all One, right? A community. It's only a matter of time.

ETA: IJ gives you a hundred icons with a free account? ... *blinks* ... Holy crap.
