Just in Case
Strikethrough '07 Ongoing Report: In an effort to avoid spamming the hell outta my flist, I'll just update this post continually with new info.
Note: the list has been reordered and now goes from newest to oldest ... 'cause that just makes more sense, doesn't it? :)
ETA31: Thanks to
f13tch3r I now have a link to IJ's administrator's journal. He clears up some things in that post I've linked you to about who owns IJ (some people have been mistakenly thinking it's 6A) and states that no journals will be deleted unless there is a DMCA violation or court order to remove content.
ETA30: Blurty. Never heard of it, but it looks interesting. It's another LJ alternative.
ETA29:
innocence_jihad has brought to our attention FandomFreenet.com, an open-source site that's being created for fanfiction and art.
ETA28:
innocence_jihad has some important posts about getting a refund from LJ/6A, and complaining about the pro-ana and child abuse comms.
ETA27: Fandom porn? No. Bible-based child abuse? Oh, sure, why not!
ETA26:
synecdochic's suggestions on how to get LJ/6A to hear us. And in this very important post she also clarifies obscenity laws.
ETA25: LJ's response to fandom's concerns: Illegal and Harmful Content Clarifications.
ETA24: Ponderosa121 has important news about a serious LJ bug/security problem that she has discovered through her suspension.
ETA23: An informative post about LJ, 6A and Obscenity Laws.
ETA:22: A proposed open letter to LJ/6A.
ETA21: Interesting convo between
violet_quill and
burr86. It took place in
violet_quill's LJ and was reposted, with permission, in GJ's fandomtossed comm.
ETA20: Not technically a Strikethrough thing, but still really important. For my American peeps and, to a lesser extent, those of us posting fanfic/fanart on American servers:
Unfortunately, there is a bill introduced in Congress that would radically alter the already draconian DMCA, so that even the perceived intent to violate copyright becomes a criminal offense punishable by jail time, massive fines and other such niceties.
Here are three things that can be done:
1. Let your Congress Critters know that you oppose this law. I personalized the letter, as that may carry a little more weight. I also changed the wording in the last paragraph from 'fans' to 'citizens', as it's more universal.
2. Email friends about this. No matter who they are, this law will affect them very badly. Whether we like it or not, no matter how hard we try not to, we all violate copyright laws (case in point: 'Happy Birthday To You' is still under copyright), and that will get worse under this proposal.
3. For those still on LJ at all, join LJ's fandom_action. It's a new community that is likely to have stuff on it that can help us to protect ourselves in certain concrete ways. It's not perfect, but it's a start, and may turn out to be a good place to 'meet' about some of the legal issues we face as fans. I might not have found that EFF site, had I not joined them and seen their post.
